PICTURES

One of our first tasks was to photograph places Jewish to us, in Budapest. Looking at the pictures, we talked about why these different places are important to us and how they relate to our own respective Jewish identity and affinities. Many photographed the small streets of district VII, the former Jewish district and ghetto. The Sirály pub and cultural hub also turned up on several pictures.

Based on the pictures, we got the impression that Jewish signs, objects, memories, spaces and identities are present in the Budapest space whilst hiding, masking themselves, only visible and legible to those who ask what they are.

In their own home, several of us had experienced a similar hiding in plain sight of the menorahs, napkin holders, "Jewsy books", old birth or marriage certificates, documents on forced labour. These items could only gain meaning after we as children questioned parents and grandparents lengthily.
